As you know, date nights with Jamie are far and few between. At least I think so. We worked very hard early on when our children were first born to encourage them to have good sleep patterns. Our children have always been easy to put to bed. Because of that, Jamie and I usually have a few hours each night alone. Time to talk, watch a movie, play a game. So, most of the time I don't really crave an actual date with him. But, about once every 3 months it's time to go out!
Last night was one of those nights :)
Friends of ours watched Maggie and Michael for us. Jamie and I headed to Panera for a nice simple quiet meal. Panera isn't one of our children's favorite places to eat. So I don't get to eat there very often. And the idea of being able to sit and talk with Jamie without feeling rushed was appealing to me.
I think we sat in there for about 2 hours!
We went over our calendar's and schedules. Michael's birthday is coming up so we talking about party's and gifts. We're going to rent a cabin up at Rock Lake Christian Assembly for a few nights next week so we discussed some details about that. Talked a little about our children's responsibilities around the house and when to begin rewarding them for jobs. We also talked about going out more. We made a list of babysitters that we know we could call and decided to do that more often.
After all that talk, we went shopping. Bought Michael some presents. A baby gift. A birthday gift for a friend. Oh, and we talked about tv's. Again. I want a new one really bad! It's just not in the budget right now.
After our exciting date we went to our friends to pick up Michael and Maggie. We love Katrina and Brian! We can talk to them for hours. And we did!
When we first arrived we gave the kids the 'ol 10 minute warning. That 10 minutes turned into... er.... a few hours!
So, we're talking and talking with our pals. Then, Brian and Katrina notice that it's getting time for them to pray* at our church. Jamie and I offered to stay with all the kids while they went and did that.
They went and prayed and came back. Then we started talking again! Hehehehe We finally pulled out of their house around midnight!
Came home, tucked the kids in bed. Jamie and I finished some talking that we didn't get to before. Then, Jamie actually left to go to the church to pray* a bit. He came home around 3:30 AM.
I'm not use to staying up that late. But, it was very very enjoyable. I'm looking forward to going out with my husband more often!
*Meridian Christian Church held a special prayer time from 8:00 PM until 8:00 AM the next morning. We're having a big shin-dig at a local park and inviting the community so we wanted to cover the event in prayer. People of our congregation were encouraged to sign up for 1 hour time slots.

A Blessed Weekend
This has been a weekend of blessings. It's been so wonderful to look back at it and be thankful.
We received a family pass to Potter Park Zoo in the mail from a friend of ours. I'm so excited to be able to take the kids there often this summer. I think we'll make it a weekly thing. We usually only go once or twice a year. It's not the greatest zoo and it's actually a little bit pricey. In my opinion.
Tyler and Nicole (our youth minister and his wife) took Maggie and Michael overnight for us. They had a great time! Nicole took pictures of the kids and got them developed and framed one for us for our anniversary. So sweet! The picture looks so good!
While the kids were out doing their thing, we headed over to Mark and Katie's house. They made us an awesome dinner! We kept them up late, but it was so nice to just relax and talk. They have a 1 year old cute little girl. She was a lot of fun to hang out with too!
One of Maggie's little friends from church invited her to her birthday party. They ended up inviting all four of us! Michael (and of course Maggie) were so thrilled because the party was at Chuck E. Cheese. We all had so much fun. Hanging out with friends, eating yummy food, and not having to clean up!
I'm sure that God used many others to bless us this weekend that I'm forgetting. It was so enjoyable for us I just have to give him the credit.

Date Night #1
I'm still far behind in posting my goals for 2009. This year my goal is to go out with Jamie once a month. Last year we didn't do so well so we're working on it yet again. That's a-okay with me.
The other day my mother and father-in-law offered to take the kids overnight for us. I was so thrilled! Jamie and I had had busy days so we just rented a few movies and bought some snacks and hung out at home. We watched... wow, I can't even remember what it was. I'm thinking... still thinking...
Lots of time has passed. Still trying to remember the name of the movie. I know it doesn't matter. But it's just bugging me that I can't think of it.
I'm back. I finally remembered the name of it... "Fool's Gold". I liked it. Can't remember much about it. But, it was entertaining. Anywho, that was our date night for January '09. Thanks mom and dad for watching the kids!!

Recap of '08
Remember the goals that I set for 2008? Neither did I until I looked back in my archives. Here they are and how I did.
1. Minimize childrens books - I cleared out a bunch. Pretty much all that I could. Although, I think I can purge some of Maggie's little board books. I'll get on that.
2. Take the kids to the public library once a week. Totally failed. I did take Maggie about once a week for story time. Never really checked out books though. Mainly movies. Still need to work on this goal.
3. Have a date night with Jamie once a month. Totally failed. I was shocked when I looked back in my archives at how little we actually went out together. I'm really going to work on this one again this year.
4. Pray before I react to the kids. I think I will always be working on this one! I'm a bit more patient with them on days that I begin with prayer. If I wake up before everyone and do a little Bible study lesson and pray alone my whole day goes smoother than when I don't. Thanks Lord for that wonderful blessing!
5. Bring down my grocery bill. I succeed sometimes and failed sometimes. I will continue to work on this. It's definitely getting easier and easier the more I work at it.
6. Dress more feminine. I'm giving up on this one. I've never really defined it so I was never sure what that goal really meant. I'll just keep dressing the way that I normally do. Well, I might try wearing lip gloss everyday. Who knows.
7. Paint and redo the downstairs bathroom. So did NOT happen. It's still this horrible bright mint green and I detest it. Maybe it will get down this year.
8. New dishes. Yippy! A goal that I actually met! Jamie's aunt had a set of all white dishes that she had from Jamie's grandma. No one else in the family wanted them. They are perfect for me! I got rid of all my other dishes. Brought out my flag style dishes and even redecorated the kitchen in my old american flag stuff. Looks nice.
9. Clear out plastic storage containers. I met this goal as well. My cupboard is less cluttered. Although, I think this will be one of those ongoing kind of goals. That stuff seems to breed all on it's own.
10. Recycle cereal boxes. Another goal met. I take my pile every few weeks or so to the recycling center since our curbside doesn't pick it up.
Whew. I had some great goals. Unfortunately not all of them were met. But, I'm pretty pleased with myself. Now on to a new year!

Date Night... I mean morning
Jamie and I had a date on Saturday morning. It was the only time we could fit it in with our schedule and the schedule of my friend who offered to watch the kids.
We dropped the kids off at the Longs house at 10 and headed to the River Trail. It's this forever long paved trail that goes all over Lansing. For the most part it follows the Grand River. It winds through downtown Lansing, over to MSU campus, and through other parts of the city. It's filled with walkers, joggers, bikers, and a few homeless people too. We saw 4 deer under the overpass of the highway. They seemed out of place.
After our 3 mile stroll, during which we actually talked non-stop, we went out to lunch at Olga's. So yummy! I've eaten there a ton of times... yet, I've always ordered the same thing. A cup of cream of broccoli soup with a piece of Olga bread and their blt Olga with Olga's sauce instead of mayo. Love it.
It was such a great morning. It was a glimpse of what could be when Maggie starts school. Jamie has Friday's and Saturday's off from the church so Friday mornings could be our time.

I Can't Decide
Last night Jamie and I watched "August Rush" and I just can't seem to decide if I liked it or not. It was a sweet story and I knew right from the start that it would have a happy ending. It had all the things in it that I like in a movie. Moving music, cute characters, a nice love story. But, I found myself bored through most of it. A few times I asked Jamie if we could just turn it off.
I did like the ending. When Lewis and Lyla were walking through the crowd and Lewis notices Lyla for the first time. His lingering gaze on her was sweet. And, to see Evan smile so big and giggle a bit when he saw the two of them was neat too. I cried a lot during the ending.
And yet, I still can't decide if I actually liked it or not...

Date Night
Jamie rented a few movies. We started watching one tonight. I was really excited about it. It seemed to do well at the theaters and a lot of people gave it good reviews. I, personally, hate it. HATE IT!
'I am Legend'
I admit, it's very well done. But, I am totally freaked. I think we're only about 20 minutes into it. Maybe 30. And the last 10 minutes I had my ears covered and my eyes covered to see just the top right corner of the screen. My chest is so tight I feel like I'm going to suffocate and my head hurts.
I decided to just leave the room and read. After I squirt vinegar on the porch of course!
* Nothing like a good ol' barf session to get your mind off of a scary movie. Maggie was coughing so hard that she threw up. I got the job of cleaning her body up while Jamie got her bed all set. Good times at the Wetzel house tonight!

Fever's and Fun
It turned out that Michael had another snow day on Friday. So, he was home for three days in a row. It wasn't too bad. I rather enjoyed it. I think Maggie did too. Michael's feeling better. It's just turned into a nasty cold now. That could be because he's a 6 yr. old boy though. Never uses a tissue, just his sleeve. Gross!
We had plans of meeting my parents this morning and handing the kids over to spend the night. Jamie and I had/have an auction/dinner thingy tonight. Plans changed.
Last night Maggie had a fever. By golly though, she is the cutest thing ever when she's sick. Tears just sort of stream down her face without any effort. And she snuggles. It's sad, but adorable at the same time.
We kept Maggie home but Michael is still going to my parents house. Maggie didn't seem to care that she was staying home. I know that Michael needed a change of scenery.
Maggie is sleeping right now. Jamie just left to go see a movie. I'm putsing around on the computer, making some cards, and just enjoying the quietness of the house. Even though we're not going to go out and have a night/morning without both kids, it's pretty nice.

Relaxing and Fun
Our date night was wonderful! We dropped the kids off and headed out to see "Juno". I think I liked it. I like movies that are just a bit quirky. Movies where the dialog sounds unrehearsed. Not too sloppy, but still not the smoothest. Probably because it's a lot like the way I talk. It was funny and... cute I guess. The subject matter wasn't light; teen pregnancy. But there were some funny lines and conversations. Overall I'd say I like it.
Unfortunately, by the end of the movie I had a huge head ache. I'm wondering if I've been experiencing migraines. I felt the same way about two weeks ago. Sensitive to light and sound and a bit queasy in my tummy. Because of that we didn't go out to eat. Jamie ran into McAlister's Deli for his meal and we went right to the hotel. I went straight for the bed... and not for you know what. I buried myself under the covers and piled pillows over my head and fell asleep around 8:00. I woke up an hour later feeling a bit better. I'm a great date aren't I?
The rest of the night I felt ok. The thing I love about going to a hotel is that I feel like I have to do nothing. I brought a book, we had cable, peanut M&M's, chips, oh and I had a bit of pop :) Basically, we stayed in bed the whole time. So nice! I got up around 10:45 this morning. Loved it!
We picked up the kids. Found out they had a blast! Nicole took them sledding. They both went one other time this winter. Maggie didn't seem to like it the last time. This time was totally different! Apparently, she picked out the biggest hill to try first. She and Nicole got onto the sled. Maggie said "No". Nicole asked her if she decided not to go down. Maggie clarified and said "I go myself". So, Nicole hopped off and Maggie went flying down the hill alone. Screaming the whole time! Nicole met her at the bottom and Maggie laughed and said "Again! Again!".
We all had a wonderful night. Now, we just have to get through tonight. After a fun filled weekend the kids are already pooped out and getting crabby.

Happy Date Night
It's official. We're going out on a real date tonight! Woo hoo! It's not because we're hesitant leaving our kids. We'll leave them anytime and with just about anybody! It's just tough to find people who will watch them. And, like I've said before, we're really content with our time together right now. We spend time together just about every evening. So, who needs to go out when you're happy with where your at?
Our friends, Tyler and Nicole, have volunteered to take the kids overnight. We'll drop off the kids and then head out to see Juno. I hope it's good. Then, dinner at McAlister's Deli. Then, we've got a gift certificate for a one night stay at a suite hotel room.
Today has already been a packed day. I did the morning thing with Michael. After taking him to school I went and cleaned a few apartments with my mother-in-law for our mentally disabled friends. Then, back to Michael's school. Michael was receiving an award... again! He got all 3's and 4's on his report card. After the ceremony, Jamie, Maggie, and I went to lunch at Fazoli's. Yummy! Now, I'm home and packing for our date :)
